What testosterone level is considered low?+
There isn’t one number that automatically means you need testosterone therapy. Most medical guidelines define testosterone deficiency as both persistent symptoms and consistently low testosterone levels confirmed by morning blood tests. Some men with lower levels feel well and don’t need treatment, while others with levels near the lower end of the normal range may have symptoms that deserve further evaluation.
At Storm Wellness Northwest, we don’t treat lab values in isolation. We consider your symptoms, overall health, medical history, and laboratory results together before recommending treatment.
Will testosterone help me lose weight?+
Testosterone is not a weight loss medication.
For men with clinically low testosterone, appropriate treatment may help improve energy, preserve or increase lean muscle mass, and support exercise performance. Those changes can make it easier to build healthy habits and improve body composition over time.
For many men, however, excess body fat contributes to lower testosterone levels. In those cases, improving metabolic health and reducing visceral fat may naturally improve hormone levels.
That’s why we often address testosterone and weight management together rather than treating them as separate issues. Our goal isn’t simply to lower the number on the scale—it’s to help you reduce body fat while protecting the muscle that keeps you strong and active.
Can I start testosterone if my labs are normal?+
If your testosterone levels are within the normal range, it’s important to understand why you’re experiencing symptoms before starting hormone therapy. Fatigue, low libido, weight gain, decreased strength, and brain fog can all have causes unrelated to testosterone, including poor sleep, obstructive sleep apnea, thyroid disorders, depression, chronic stress, certain medications, or metabolic disease.
Rather than assuming testosterone is the answer, we’ll perform a comprehensive evaluation to identify the underlying cause and recommend the treatment that’s most likely to improve your health.
How often will I need blood work?+
Monitoring is an important part of safe testosterone therapy.
Most patients have laboratory testing before starting treatment, again several weeks after beginning therapy or after a dose adjustment, and then periodically as treatment continues. The exact schedule depends on your individual treatment plan, response to therapy, and medical history.
Monitoring may include testosterone levels, blood counts, PSA when appropriate, liver and kidney function, and other laboratory tests based on your health needs.
Regular follow-up allows us to make thoughtful adjustments and helps ensure treatment remains both effective and safe.
Is testosterone therapy safe?+
For appropriately selected patients who are monitored regularly, testosterone replacement therapy can be a safe and effective treatment.
Like any medication, TRT has potential risks and benefits. That’s why ongoing monitoring is essential. We carefully follow laboratory values, discuss changes in symptoms, and watch for side effects such as elevated red blood cell counts or other concerns that may require adjusting your treatment.
Before starting therapy, we’ll review your medical history, cardiovascular risk factors, sleep health, fertility goals, and other conditions that may influence whether testosterone is appropriate for you.
Our goal is to use the lowest effective dose to help you feel your best while prioritizing long-term safety.
Will I have to take testosterone forever?+
Not necessarily.
If testosterone therapy is prescribed because your body is no longer producing adequate amounts of testosterone, treatment is often long-term. However, the decision to continue therapy should be revisited over time and should always reflect your health goals, symptoms, and response to treatment.
In some men, improving sleep, reducing excess body fat, increasing physical activity, or addressing other medical conditions may improve hormone levels naturally. Those possibilities are part of the conversation during your evaluation.
We’ll continue reassessing your treatment over time and make recommendations based on your individual situation—not a one-size-fits-all protocol.
What if my testosterone level is “normal,” but I still don’t feel like myself?+
Feeling fatigued, losing muscle, gaining weight, or noticing changes in mood or sexual health doesn’t automatically mean you need testosterone therapy. These symptoms can have many contributing factors, and it’s important not to dismiss them simply because a single lab value falls within the normal range.
At Storm Wellness Northwest, we take a broader view of men’s health. We evaluate your symptoms alongside your sleep, metabolic health, body composition, nutrition, medications, and laboratory results to understand the bigger picture. Sometimes testosterone is part of the solution—but sometimes another diagnosis or treatment offers a better path forward.
What labs do I need before starting TRT?+
Before starting testosterone therapy, we’ll perform a comprehensive evaluation to help determine whether TRT is the most appropriate treatment.
Depending on your medical history, your laboratory evaluation may include:
- Total testosterone (morning)
- Free testosterone (when indicated)
- Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin (SHBG), when appropriate
- Estradiol
- Complete Blood Count (CBC)
- Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP)
- Lipid panel
- PSA (when appropriate)
- Thyroid function testing
- Additional metabolic or hormone testing based on your symptoms and health history
If you have recent laboratory results, we’ll review them to determine whether additional testing is needed. If not, any necessary laboratory tests can be ordered during your initial consultation, and we’ll review the results together before discussing whether testosterone therapy is the right option for you.
Do you prescribe testosterone on the first visit?+
Not always. During your initial consultation, we’ll review your symptoms, medical history, current medications, and any available laboratory results. If additional testing is needed, we’ll order it and schedule a follow-up visit to review the findings together. Our goal is to ensure testosterone therapy is appropriate, safe, and tailored to your individual health needs—not to rush into treatment.
Can I do this virtually?+
Yes. Men’s health consultations are available by secure telehealth for patients who are physically located in Washington or Oregon at the time of their visit.
If laboratory testing is needed, we’ll send a lab requisition to a convenient local laboratory, such as Quest Diagnostics, Labcorp, or another participating facility. Once your results are available, we’ll review them with you during your follow-up appointment and discuss whether testosterone therapy—or another treatment approach—is the best fit for your goals.
What are the different ways testosterone can be administered?+
Testosterone replacement therapy can be prescribed in several forms, and the best option depends on your medical history, lifestyle, preferences, and treatment goals. During your consultation, we’ll discuss which approach is most appropriate for you.
Common options include:
- Testosterone injections — The most commonly prescribed form of TRT. Injection technique is taught so patients can self-administer at home, depending on your treatment plan. Many patients appreciate the flexibility and effectiveness of injectable therapy.
- Topical creams or gels — Applied to the skin once daily, topical testosterone provides a needle-free option for some men. Care must be taken to avoid transferring the medication to others through skin-to-skin contact.
- Subcutaneous pellets — Small pellets are placed beneath the skin during a minor in-office procedure and gradually release testosterone over several months. This option appeals to men who prefer fewer treatments throughout the year.
The right treatment isn’t the same for everyone. We’ll review the benefits, limitations, cost considerations, and monitoring requirements of each option so you can make an informed decision.
How long until I feel a difference?+
Most patients notice changes in energy and sleep within 4–6 weeks, with continued improvements over 3–6 months.
Do you accept insurance for men’s health visits?+
We are currently expanding our insurance participation and are in the process of credentialing with several select insurance plans. Until that process is complete, appointments may be offered on a self-pay basis.
Our goal is to make comprehensive men’s health care—including hormone evaluation, metabolic health, and treatment of medically appropriate conditions—as accessible as possible. If you’re interested in using insurance, please contact us before your appointment, and we’ll be happy to discuss your options and provide updates on participating plans.
